They are launching a high altitude balloon that will go up to 100,000 feet with a ham transmitter on board broadcasting at 145.600 megahertz and they are looking for reports and this is a high school kids project.
Launch August 13. up for a couple of days.
They did the same before and got reports listening to the transmissions as far away as Canada. 145 megahertz doesn't do much over the horizon transmissions like say 20 megahertz, it basically shoots right through the ionosphere so it basically line of sight but at 100,000 feet up you get a really good line of sight🙂
20 megahertz bounces back down to Earth because the ionosphere is more of a mirror to the lower frequencies so those lower frequencies can bounce around the world but not 145 megs.
This whole project is to boost STEM interest in kids.
A great project.
