This shows just how haphazard evolution is!

The gist of it is that they discovered is that the remains of genes of an ancient retrovirus permanent trapped in our genome that now, rather than causing disease, have evolved to change their function to allow one human cell type to change to another -a biological ability that is absolutely essential to our modern day biology. So, we now have direct evidence that we have evolved to totally depend on a parasite turned symbiote! Just think; we evolved from some diseased animals!

My understanding was that many of the cells key structures were other cells that had been assimilated, sometimes multiple times. Also many genes are passed around by virus'.
