I have long been of the opinion that life on Earth probably got started multiple times in different environments, in tide pools (where micro-lightning provided the energy), at ocean-floor geysers (hot minerals and natural churning of the waters, etc.)--and now, impact craters. This would go a long ways towards explaining the great variety of life forms we see, as multiple independent starts in different environments would naturally lead to divergent evolutionary paths.
