Some cosmology researchers have said the early universe could not be completely explained by gravitational interactions and have said all along there had to be large galactic scale magnetic fields. They seem to be right now. A thirty year long research enterprise seems to have proven early galaxies had magnetic fields as strong as ones today, refuting the the galactic dynamo theory prevalent for the past 50 years or so.
