What about honouring the second and where possible the third place in tournaments?

One could give (virtual) gold-silver-bronze medals as in most of the sport games, or points like 5-3-1 for the winner, second and third of a tournament.

I think, the second place in a tourney of let's say 64 participants is quite good.

Second place in a chess game is nothing to write home about. Second place in a tournament is just the first loser.
