this is an interesting idea. whole different ways of thinking... but how then you gotta carry around an erector set to build your matrix each time... and then how to attach the peices, how to move them in the middle...

do they actually make these things commercially?

they have been in existance for quite a few years, made popular by Star Trek, but never really took off. But a 3 tiered board would be something to see online

What are you talking about? I meant chess pieces that look real, and being able to play at different camera angles!
