Instead of completely removing them. The poster could still be banned and the rest of the thread wouldn't be affected. This would also have a learning effect so people would become accustomed to what is not allowed.
I don't think it would be much more work [if any at all] for the moderators and gradually would become less and less as people got the hang of it.
