The site reports the number of half moves since your last pawn move or capture. Could someone tell me why I would want to know that? Happy Holidays!

Because if there are 50 half moves without a pawn move or capture you can claim a win.

Excuse me,but how can you claim a win?

A draw is all you can get with the 50 moves rule which becomes 100 for particular endgames as K+R vs K+R+B.

Nope. Under FIDE rule it used to be but now it is a firm 50 moves no matter what the position.
