I cannot stand the way text inserted into quotes is transformed into
    a ludicrously large font size
    and placed in a
stupidly large band of white screen,
    making
    a visual mess
instead of a helpful emphasis or neat visual distinction.

Possibly, but at the very least the size of the quoted material should be no greater than that of the surrounding text. Just a little smaller is good, equally large is fine, but the way it's now is exactly the Wrong Thing. Typographically speaking, it's simply incorrect.
