Seems the site goes down for about 45 minutes every morning at 2am GMT-4. Would it be possible to do this only once a week? If it is due to backups, would hot backups be an option?

I don't like the site going down either (when you figure out the time differences, it goes down just after I get home from school and start making moves, so I sit here refreshing RHP and doing homework...not fun), but I guess it is a necessary part of the site.

it does happen every single day. Russ or Chrismo did mention eliminating this a while back, but i dont know how this idea is coming along.
