Players can write testimonials about other players. These appear (say optionally) on the user's profile. Comments on a user would entice other users seeking certain playing styles to compete with. It would add some flavor to opponents I now see as hardly more human than chess bots.
As for the capability of abuse, such a system as described above has been achieved well enough by social networks with sufficient moderation controls in place.
