I have no idea what updates you made recently to the UI/UX, but moving pieces has become extremely buggy. Seriously. The piece drops and you have to move it again. TEN TIMES.

Please, fix this!

@carlspring

Nothing of any significance has changed with the board UI.*

If pieces are dropping early then this is most likely a mechanical fault with an aging mouse. (A "drag and drop" movement isn't completed as the left mouse button breaks contact as you move the mouse.)

Try another mouse if possible, and let me know if this is the case.

* Live chess board uses the new chess board code, which is not used elsewhere.

Hi @Russ ,

Thanks for getting back to me!

I am a software engineer, so that's one of the first things I thought of. I also have two touchpads -- a built-in one on my laptop's keyboard and one from Logitech. I am using Chrome Version 129.0.6668.100 (Official Build) (64-bit) under Ubuntu and this happens with them as well. Also, my extrnal mouse is a high end Logitech Anywhere MX3 and is reasonably new (less tha 1 yr old) and I'm not using this for professional gaming -- but rather -- for development purposes.

The bug seems to occur the first time a game screen is loaded. You drag the piece into the square and it fits reasonably well into it and poof! It's back in its original square. Very annoying! You may have to try 2-3 times sometimes. Peculiarly, if you refresh the page it doesn't always re-occur, although it does.

I'm not sure what's going on, but it seems to have started in the recent weeks or so. Isn't anybody else reporting it?

Thanks for the extra detail.

No other reports of this - hence the reason I assumed the issue was localised to your setup and the mouse almost certainly the issue.

Can you try something else here - from the page footer, look for the "For Beginners".

Then click any of the "How the" piece moves, and let me know if you have a similar problem? These boards are the new board code, so it would be useful to know if you have a similar problem there?

I just noticed you are using a small board setting - does the same issue occur when the board size is set to the maximum size? From My Settings >> Board Settings)

This might provide a clue to your issue.

In the How-To-s it seems to be behaving a bit better, but I can reproduce it there as well. If you're not perfectly aligned, or are not 95% inside the target square, it does occur.

Changing the board settings doesn't seem to help.

Hi, "95% correct" sounds a little like a flaw in calculating the mouse pointers position, hence
- could you play around with different screen resolutions
- as a developer you probably run 2 monitors, maybe 3 with a laptop screen
- are you running a different OS in a VM maybe?
- zoom factor in Chrome set to 100%?
Just some ideas ...

I'm just using a single screen -- that of my laptop, which is on 4K.
I'm not using a VM for this 🙂 It's just a regular Chrome window. I often find that the dragging and dropping is just not working as one would expect.
