I suspect that suggestions for discounted (or free) subscriptions from non-subscribers just come off as cheapness. (I include suggestions for more subscriber-like functionality for non-subscribers as a "discount".)

I wouldn't make any such suggestions until I were a subscriber. Then the readers know it's not niggardliness but just a suggestion for a better community.

I purchased a burger today, but I'm going to want a free one tomorrow. That's my idea of an ideal community.

So, you want to become large enough to be considered a "community"? šŸ˜‰

Russ has said in the past that such a tournament would be an open invitation to non-sub cheaters and has even turned down offers from members who wish to sponsor such a tournament.

I've got one of those metabolisms where I can eat or drink all I like. Too bad it probably all builds up on the arteries.

5'11" 155 since I stopped growing near 25 or so years back.

No. They definitely should not have that. The idea of subscribing IS their business. If you owned a business, you would not give it away just to be 'nice'.
