Sonships supporting passage for believing that all non Christians [apparently from the time of Adam to now] will be eternally tormented is this :
We are bound to thank God always for you, brethren, as it is meet, because that your faith groweth exceedingly, and the charity of every one of you all toward each other aboundeth; So that we ourselves glory in you in the churches of God for your patience and faith in all your persecutions and tribulations that ye endure: Which is a manifest token of the righteous judgment of God, that ye may be counted worthy of the kingdom of God, for which ye also suffer: Seeing it is a righteous thing with God to recompense tribulation to them that trouble you; And to you who are troubled rest with us, when the Lord Jesus shall be revealed from heaven with his mighty angels, In flaming fire taking vengeance on them that know not God, and that obey not the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ: Who shall be punished with everlasting destruction from the presence of the Lord, and from the glory of his power; When he shall come to be glorified in his saints, and to be admired in all them that believe (because our testimony among you was believed) in that day. (2 Thessalonians 1:3-10 KJV)
The passage says:
- The faith and good works of the church is growing
- the church is being persecuted by unbelievers
- Jesus will take vengeance on those who persecute His church, who do not know God and who do not obey His teachings.
- These people will be destroyed.
The problems with sonships interpretation are as follows:
1. The passage says nothing of eternal torment.
2. The passage refers to people [unbelievers] who are persecuting Christians. So to say that for eg all atheists on this site will face eternal torment is false unless it can be shown that atheists are in fact persecuting Christians, and are not following Christ's teachings.
This doctrine is believed by many Christians here, sonship, KellyJ, Secondson and several others. There is no supporting passages for eternal torment for all unbelievers.
Therefore the people who are destroyed are:
- those who persecute Christ's people
- those who do not know God and do not obey Christ's teachings
Jesus will judge who these people are at the appointed time.
@chaney3 saidAt Easter and at Christmas here in Indonesia we sometimes have bombs go off outside churches by terrorist groups seeking to persecute Christians. Something similar happened in Sri Lanka earlier this year. Christians face persecution all around the world. By contrast, this chess website is an entirely safe place where Christians with different opinions can mingle with each other and with non-believers and argue their various corners robustly.
"Persecute"....hostility and ill treatment towards others based on religious beliefs.
You do that all the time Rajk.
@fmf saidThe bible is full of examples of this kind of persecution that involves life and death, hangings, beatings etc. Chaney3 and some others are just drama queens who feel that an opposing view, sometimes expressed strongly is tantamount to persecution

@rajk999 saidThe definition provided says nothing about beatings, stabbings, etc. It says hostility and ill treatment, which includes *words*.

You guys deflect with notions of drama queen, and it's silly.
@chaney3 saidSo you believe that the bible says that Christ will torment for eternity people who speak harshly to Christians. That kind of doctrine puts you squarely in the camp of the stupid.

@rajk999 saidAll I'm saying is that you listed persecution as a big no-no, yet you do it yourself.
So you believe that the bible says that Christ will torment for eternity people who speak harshly to Christians. That kind of doctrine puts you squarely in the camp of the stupid.
Why won't you admit it?
@rajk999 saidI cannot say that I trust everything written in the bible.
Rather than post an unsupported opinion why not provide a convincing argument supported by some bible references?
If Jesus really sacrificed Himself on the cross, for everyone, that's it. His love for all of us is not bound by rules, especially the rule of 'belief'. We are human, and cannot possibly be bound to believing something that happened 2,000 years ago.
