It is ironic for Catholics that they want everyone to follow god's laws yet require priests to be celibate!
They sent over lots of catholic priests and nuns to try to convert the natives with just
enough workers to support them.
Which of course meant that they had comparatively little population growth because the
priests and nuns were supposed to be celibate and thus all the population growth had to
come from the smaller number of workers.
Whereas of course the protestant settlers had no such problem or limitation.

i see non are later than the 1500's, smells like a cover up.
ive read also that the celibacy causes a build up aggression in men of the cloth and there have been several reports of them bashing bishops, i wonder if any popes have been caught bashing the bishop (teehee).
Originally posted by stellspalfieCover-ups in the Roman Catholic Chruch have been going on for centuries ever since a group of non-believers took over the Church. That's why they did not like people like Martin Luther questioning their authority and not wanting the people to have their own bibles to read. When I was young, I dated a nice girl that was Roman Catholic and I asked to see her Bible since I had heard there were some differences. She said they did not have one because they didn't need it since the priest told them everything they needed to know. So I guess some may still have that attitude today.

Originally posted by RJHindsIt is possible that you contributed to her distrust of people reading the Bible for themselves. If she thought you were reading the Bible for yourself and that you were reading it differently than the RCC does, and if she believed the RCC reading, she would naturally think reading it for yourself is a bad idea.

Did you ask her what she thought about some of the things the Bible says, like, did you think of reading her a parable and asking her what she was taught that it meant? Did you find any great differences between what you two believed? I'm talking about what she believed, not what the RCC teaches generally. There are a lot of people who worship as Catholics who don't believe everything the Church says about Bible teachings.

Let me repeat the point - She said they did not have one (a Bible) because they didn't need it (a Bible), since the priest told them everything they needed to know.
