Saying that there are no atheists in fox holes is akin to saying that there are no theists in whore houses. Granted, you would think that the majority are probably not theists but one cannot make that broad assumption.

Anyone seriously professing this ridiculous claim needs their brain examined. I can't say I've ever heard it before, but it seems common knowledge in the US. I'd find it almost insulting, if it weren't for the fact that (*insert much needed definitory statement, to pre-empt comeback and be smug, here) atheism is not a system of belief and so I am not bothered by insults against it.

I agree with your general point but . . .

you really think that the majority of people in whore houses are atheists?

That's absurd.

That is one of the best posts I've read in a long time.

It's not an argument against atheists it's an argument against foxholes.

I would have thought "There are no atheists in foxholes" was a way of saying, "If you think you are going to die you suddenly start believing in..."

A weakness familiar to many atheists, I would have thought, and more amusing than offensive.

Belief in anything based entirely on fear is a poor objective as well as a false faith.

Sure: and you slow down when you see a cop out looking for speeders out of love, right?

What exactly would someone be believing in this situation? Does the speeder suddenly see the error of his ways? No. He believes that the cop will pull him over and give him a ticket, which he believed before his foot hit the acceleratrix. I don't see the relation with the foxhole. Perhaps I'm just too stupid.
