    Question to the Christians here:

Is this guy's view too austere or does he have a valid point?

Valid point. But what is needed is the discovery of how much more enjoyable God can be.
    Asceticism will not work.

Christian music can have a beat if it is not too distracting.
And in the past John and Charles Wesley used secular popular tunes and created hymns from them to reach people not coming to sit in sanctuaries.

A musical group called The St. Louis Jesuits was a group which produced some beautiful contemporary Christian songs IMO.
