Sometimes you want to call attention to an interesting idea, even if that idea is external.
For making an argument, quoting a qualified authority on the subject can be helpful. I do agree that you should not expect the quote to do all the arguing for you.

Quoting miles and miles of Scripture I find tedious and often just skip over it, especially when it is interspersed with some strained interpretation. I think by now we all know where certain posters stand on faith vs. works; no need to keep rehashing that topic.
