They aren't very cuddly. The tendency to be judgemental may be an important part of the relationship. If the machine is programmed to always be nice, it's of no great value when it is.
Would you consider a relationship with a real person who was always nice to you to have no great value?

Jack Warden, yes? Great actor. And that was a good episode, too.

Yes, the story of Pygmalion, a story device used in many stories and films, perhaps most notably, the adaptation My Fair Lady in 1964.

And don't forget Pinocchio.

Depends on if I deserved it or not.

The difference is that, in the Pygmalion story, Galatea would be the computer, but in Pinocchio, Pinocchio himself would be the computer. 🙂

That merely says that some Japanese men (who, after all, are one of the few nations rivaling the English for sexual repression) prefer the safety of an artificial girlfriend to a real one, not that it's better for them as Odbod posited.
FTR, I don't think the latter will happen for a good long time, if it ever will.

Well I don't think it is easy to make a judgement as to what is 'better' for someone. If someone prefers the artificial girlfriend then they have made the judgement that it is better for them.
I am currently single because at this point in my life I consider it better for me. If I could find an artificial girlfriend that has good sides and not too many downsides then I might prefer it to being single and to being in a
'real' relationship. And who are you to tell me it is not better for me?

Must you bring politics into EVERY conversation?

Keep it where there are grognards like you, just waiting to pounce on the subject at every opportunity, the Debates Forum. Or have they kicked you out for being such a knob about it? Is that why you're forcing political conversation here in this forum, where it does NOT belong?

Constantly talking politics bores me to tears, actually. So keep it out of here, this is NOT the forum for it.

Very nice. I didn't know there was a place you could see these old shows online. But I never looked that closely, either.

A classic film from 1975 related to this is The Stepford Wives.

I mean the original which I have seen, the remake in 2004 or so has it as a comedy and probably misses the point, I haven't seen it.
