THE HIGHEST KNOWLEDGE OF GOD FLOWS FROM LOVE
VATICAN CITY, MAY 2, 2007 (VIS) - During his general audience this morning, the Pope returned to consider the figure of Origen, the famous third century historian. Last week the Holy Father had focussed on the life of this Father of the Church and on his literary works, this week he turned to Origen's teaching ...[text shortened]... ontemplation of the Knowledge and the Truth that is Jesus Christ."
Once more, rule by coincidence!
Origen had a three-fold method of exegeting scripture:
(body), representing the plain sense of the text;
(soul), representing the moral or tropological sense; and
(spirit), representing a deeper spiritual or mystical sense.
This is analogous to the 4-level reading “down into the text” of Hebrew midrash. The Antiochene school tended to shy away from allegorical readings, but recognized the metaphoricity of language and parable, symbol and typology.

Apparently, the medieval church followed the Alexandrian method:
“In what was taken over from earlier authorities throughout this period the Alexandrian tradition [of which, Origen] predominated over that of Antioch. The recognition of lower and higher sense was applied in accordance with a 4-fold division into the literal, allegorical, moral (or tropological), and mystical (or anagogical).” [From “The History of Biblical Interpretation,” by George W. Anderson, in The Interpreter’s One-Volume Commentary on the Bible
