Life is for those who live righteously
Simple death is for those who did nothing good and nothing really bad.
Torment is for the Devil and his evil angels.
Because people who believe it is right insist that it is right because it is self-evidently right.
Their god figure is good and only does good things and their god figure tortures people for eternity so torturing people for eternity is an example of a good thing.
Added to that is the fact that, having established that torturing people for eternity is an example of a good thing, people look to see who does this good thing ~ they must be good if they do good things such as this - who is it? It's their god figure.
A good god who does only good things. Torturing people for eternity not only illustrates this, it proves it.
Something along those lines. Apparently.

“Alex, I’ll bet it all on simple death.”
Even you, the chief RHP advocate of this view, must admit (not you, not really) that your triage scenario lacks the high drama that has all who think about it, dangling above the soon to be eternal lake of fire in the final reel, wondering if we’ve got our beliefs and sins in a forgivable row.
The dramatic view of those pitching Armageddon and eternal hellfire does more to make this pre-afterlife period we are in consequential, and therefore involving of its audience, especially for the impressionable among us.
This is true regardless of whether the hellfire version is accurate, as nothing in this post or any other negates that possibility.
Worried? I’ll say it so they won’t have to:
That’s the idea.

The ones with no God [lets call them atheists], can live without fear if they live normal lives ie they eat and drink, and do not commit atrocious sins. They die and will not be raised. According to Christ they have had their reward. Atheists who please God will be judged and rewarded.
The grossly evil and sinful ones know who they are and how they live. They will face a punishment worse than death.
The righteous ones will enter the Kingdom of God.
The worrying is for those who have misread the requirements for eternal life, according to the Bible and have gone after their own false doctrines. The guys who said Lord Lord, thinking that doing miracles was enough for Christ.

Some of us are guests for an indeterminate period of time at a country mansion. The owner, our host, is not seen directly, but has left what some of us believe are his writings. Some of us speak as his servants, appointed interpreters of those writings.
It is clear to some of us, not all of us, that our host is going to reward or punish some of us someday depending on whether our beliefs and or behavior are what he says he wants. What he wants is unclear to some of us, and is as clear as a bell to others of us.
Based on observation, there is one thing we all believe -- we all believe our stay at the mansion will end someday. Some of the writings allude to this. The writings lead some of us to think more about one topic than any other: understanding the predicament we are in, and dealing with whatever follows it to obtain our best outcome.. There are hints at what might work, in his writings. Again, murky to some, clear to others.
Develop the story in your own way.
Or not, you can be agnostic about it. It doesn't matter. This story is only make-believe.
