I think I can see where you're coming from.
How about cultured human meat? You're not eating another human being in that case. Actually, how about cultured anything meat? How does the vegetarian in you see that?
Although I currently find the eating of any meat repellant, it probably would be the case that I would consume animal meat and feed it to my family if that was the only means of survival. (And yes, cultured animal meat would be better still). But I couldn't apply this to humans, even of the cultured variety. I don't think there is any coming back from that.

Hmm. Again, I do think I see your perspective, and I don't doubt that you could hold to your principles even in times of desperate need - for yourself. Do you really think you could watch your family starve though? That's the stumbler for me. On my own, I think I'd probably rather take an easy exit, but I'm not confident I could watch my dependents suffer that much. I think I'd rather feed them "meat" than help them die.

Of course, I eat meat anyway, so it's probably not such a long stretch for me.

I suspect you might find it a longer stretch than you think. Things often seem a little more doable when hypothetical in nature. Family does of course compound the issue, but not enough to sway my actions.

Perhaps one day we will sit down and discuss this over lunch. (But you won't be trusted with the menu).

Oh I certainly don't for a moment imagine it would be an easy thing. As I said, if it's just me, I'd probably go for an easy exit before I got to that stage.

I had roadkill badger once. Surprisingly good!

Given that our civilization seems to be careering inexorably along the road to collapse, I recently found myself wondering if - should the desperate need arise - I would be able to contemplate cannibalism. The conversation this thought generated didn't really reach any conclusion, but I thought I'd open a thread here and see what views the more spiritually-minded among us might care to share?
0% chance I would ever knowingly consume human flesh. My family can speak for themselves.

If my neighbors want to share my bounty upon my death, I would be fine with that.

Morals and ethics and personal and I would never presume to force mine on another. Who would have the ego and lack of humility to go through this world thinking they have the right to force their morals and ethics on someone else. Oh wait ...

I will recommend The Road by Cormac McCarthy, I found it fascinating.

It's an excellent book, as is the rest of McCarthy's work.
