The man whose shot was "heard 'round the world" in 1951 passed away today at 86 years of age. Obviously, the legendary game for which Mr. Thomson was notorious was well before my time but I have relived the moment many times through the words of American author Don DeLillo in his novel Underworld, specifically the prologue entitled The Triumph of Death which captures the game, the hysteria and the era in breathtaking fashion.
Baseball fans -- take the time to visit your local library, pick up a copy of Underworld, and read the short story. The story can also be found in novella form as Pafko at the Wall.
