It's a cheap novelty to grab attention for a sport that is dying in the states. The first one featured two Canadian teams and it seemed to be more genuine, but even then it's a cheesy way of deciding who gets awarded two points...
I know if my Leafs lost in an outdoor game and we missed the playoffs again by one point I'd be angry, but then again there's at least a million other reaons why we'd miss playoffs!

Sure it's a cheesy way to expand the sport. The only thing to save the game is to get rid of a bunch of teams in the US south and west coast. They're just aren't enough good players around so that each team can play at a high skill level. Too many crap players mean teams play defense and trap to make up for the lack of skill.
Contraction will never happen even though the game would zoom into the stratosphere if it did.
Alternatively, I think we should move into a form of what english soccer has. The bottom 3 teams in the NHL get bumped down to the AHL and the top 3 AHL teams get bumped up to the NHL.

It's all about getting the selling price of the teams higher. Everything else is secondary and irrelevant.
