Seems like it was all the rage 15 years ago or so to change teams' names that were deemed offensive.
In general, most of the names aren't that big of a deal. Names like Braves or Indians or Chiefs aren't inherently demeaning. And no one is bothered much when teams are named after other ethnicities. There was never any fuss over whether Notre Dame's depiction of the Fighting Irish was offensive to Irish people. Or whether the Minnesota Vikings were unfairly portraying Scandinavians.
But I've always been bothered by the Redskins name. It's a term that is clearly an epithet against Native Americans. And you'd think that Washington, which probably has more politically correct people per capita than anywhere else in the country, would be the last city to use such a term for one of their teams. Even the concept of the Washington Bullets was considered offensive enough to warrant a change to Wizards.
