Different type of torunaments

How about we make tournaments with groups of around 6 where the top 2 goes to the next round?

Good idea, would be good to see this. Especially as I seem to get close to the top but never have yet. 😞

yea that should be better as in groups i always end up with a 2000 as the top man then i have no chance.but if top 2 go through that gives everyone else a chance in the group.

Then you'll just face the 2000+ players in the second round. Why give them the extra games to play?

It would make more chance of an upset and a bit more excitement.

You have the chance from the upset in the first round.

if top 2 players go through then it will still be a mix of ratings so it keeps it exciting.

Why don't we set up murder squads to take out players ranked above 1800, that would work too.

Why play open tourneys at all then?

This would be well suited to the banded tournaments, especially as it would give players who are actually within the rating bands a chance to progress.

I'm not sure of your objective with this style tournament, but the funny thing is that I think it makes it more likely that the best player (highest rating) will win as 1 upset will not cost them their chance at victory.

For example Xanthos (or any 1800+ player) and I end up in the same group. Miraculously, I manage to win and draw against him (or win & lose and someone else draws him). In our normal tournaments, he is out and I move on. In this case, we both move on and chances are that I have to try and repeat my feat in a latter round.

Not only that, but by advancing 2 people through the first round, you make a longer tournament as more people advance to each sucessive round.

Are there knockout tournaments on RHP like in the FA Cup or the later stages of the World Cup ? That always produces a few giant killers and upsets.

If you want to face much higher rated players your only chance in tournaments, namely open tournaments. There is no point in allowing 2 players through just so that smiffy gets another shot at losing to them again in the next round, as it just means that the tournament will go on several rounds longer.
