Matej Šebenik is a Slovenian chess grandmaster. Born on August 11, 1987, he earned his International Grandmaster title in 2008. He is considered one of the leading Slovenian chess players.


Šebenik won the Slovenian Youth Chess Championship twice: once in the under-20 category in 2007, and then again in the overall category in 2009. In the national senior championship, he became the runner-up in 2006 and 2007, before eventually winning in 2011. He also tied for first in the 2013 Vidmar Memorial tournament.


Internationally, Šebenik had his first significant achievement in 2008 when he tied for first in an open tournament in Nova Gorica, Slovenia. He also won the 41st Bosna tournament in Sarajevo in 2011.


In team competitions, Šebenik has also been successful. He was part of the Slovenian national team in the 2008 and 2012 Chess Olympiads, and the 2007 and 2011 European Team Chess Championships. In domestic competitions, he played for the ŠK Branik Maribor.


Outside of competitive chess, Šebenik graduated from the University of Maribor with a degree in business and economics.
