Alvar Alonso Rosell is a Spanish chess player who earned his Grandmaster (GM) title in 2012. He was born in Girona, Catalonia, Spain on October 13, 1990. Alonso directed his focus primarily on his chess career from 2008, after the completion of high school. The chess prodigy had successful standings and performances that led to achieving titles such as the International Master (IM) in 2008 and Grandmaster (GM) in 2012.
His first tournament victory was at the International Open Ciutat de Balaguer in 2006. Several other competitive achievements, such as the Andorra International Open in 2012 and the Major Open at Gibraltar Masters in 2013, added to his impressive record.
Despite his successes, an indefinite break was taken from his chess career in 2014. His desire for knowledge led him to studying Philosophy, Politics, and Economics (PPE) at King's College London while also becoming an active member of King's College London Chess Society. His education did not subdue his chess talent as he still managed to bag the British Blitz Championship in 2015 and the London Chess Classic FIDE Open two consecutive times in 2016 and 2017.
In 2018, Alonso tied 4th-18th with other participants in the Sunway Sitges International Chess Festival. The same year, he played two friendly matches with Jan-Krzysztof Duda and Wojciech Moranda who are two Polish GMs. Alonso achieved victory against Duda and drew with Moranda.
He last played in Sitges, Spain in 2019 at the Sunway Sitges International Chess Festival where he scored 3/9 and tied 87th-128th. Thereafter, no record of Alonso participating in a tournament has been reported so far.
