António Santos Antunes is a retired Portuguese chess champion. Born in Lisbon on 10 July 1948, he was awarded the title of International Master in 1975, and achieved the title of International Grandmaster in 1985. He competed in ten different Chess Olympiads from 1974 to 1996 as part of the Portuguese national team. Antunes won the Portuguese Chess Championship tournament a record 13 times between 1975 and 1992. He later participated in several FIDE World Championships and has beaten multiple grandmasters, including former world champion Boris Spassky. He retired from professional chess play in 2004 when he took up the role of trainer with the Angola national team.
