After winning the FIDE World Cup in 2005, he emerged as a top-level player and had since consistently ranked among the world's elite players.

Aronian is known for his deep understanding of the game, and his imaginative and aggressive style of play. He has been one of the key figures in the rise of Armenian chess in the international scene. Aronian was awarded the title of "Honored Master of Sport of the Republic of Armenia" in 2009.

In January 2021, it was announced that Aronian, in the wake of the catastrophic 2020 Nagorno-Karabakh war and the death of his wife in a car accident, would be moving to St. Louis, Missouri, and would be changing federations from Armenia to the United States.

Aronian is also a keen musician, and has been involved in charity work relating to chess for kids. Between 2010 and 2020, he was in a relationship with the woman's international master Arianne Caoili, whom he married in 2017 and lost in 2020.
