Yusnel Bacallao Alonso (born April 28, 1988) is a Cuban chess Grandmaster (GM). He achieved the rank of GM in 2013.
Bacallao Alonso was born and raised in Matanzas, Cuba. He began playing chess at the age of 8 and quickly rose through the ranks. His talent for the game led him to become the 2008 Cuban Champion, as well as the Under-20 National Champion. He participated in various international chess events, such as The World Chess Olympiad and Pan American Team Chess Championship.
In terms of his career's ranking, he first gained the title of International Master (IM) in 2008 before advancing to become a Grandmaster (GM) in 2013. In 2015, he was ranked the 8th best player in Cuba and the 821st best player in the world.
Throughout his career, he has competed against numerous top-ranked GMs, such as Ukrainian GM Vassily Ivanchuk and Russian GM Sergey Karjakin.
Aside from being a chess player, Bacallao Alonso has also contributed to scholarly articles on chess. His research work includes a collaboration on a paper titled "Positional Evaluation Functions in Computer Chess Algorithm".
