Axel Bachmann is a Paraguayan chess Grandmaster. Born in Ciudad del Este on November 4, 1989, Bachmann won the South American Under 20 Championship in 2007, thereby earning the International Master (IM) title. He obtained his Grandmaster (GM) title in 2008.

In 2008, Bachmann also won the Championship of Paraguay. In 2012, he won the 2nd Latin American Cup in Montevideo, Uruguay, and took part in the Chess Olympiad representing Paraguay.

In 2014, Bachmann won the 4th Memorial GM Antonio Rocha in Portugal and the traditional Aeroflot Open in Moscow, Russia. This win qualified him to play at the Dortmund Sparkassen Chess Meeting in 2014, where he finished last.

At the American Continental Championship of 2015 held in Montevideo, he finished second behind the U.S. GM Samuel Shankland, thus qualifying for the Chess World Cup 2015. There, he was knocked out in the first round by the eventual winner, GM Sergey Karjakin of Russia.

Bachmann was also a student of Webster University's SPICE Program in the United States under the guidance of former women's world champion Susan Polgar from 2014 to 2016, graduating with a Master's degree in finance.

In November 2019, he became the first Latin American to win the Marcel Duchamp Cup in a tournament held in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
