László Bárczay (1936–2016) was a Hungarian chess Grandmaster. Born on February 21, 1936, in Budapest, Hungary, Bárczay won the Hungarian Chess Championship four times. In 1961, he tied for first place with Mikhail Tal in a chess tournament held in Budapest, which catapulted him into international prominence. He played for the Hungarian national team in the Chess Olympiad multiple times from 1964 until 1980, securing several medals including the team gold in 1978. He was awarded the International Master (IM) title in 1962, and became a Grandmaster (GM) in 1967. Bárczay passed away on 21 November 2016.
