Dibyendu Barua is an Indian chess Grandmaster who was regarded as India's second International Chess Grandmaster, right after Viswanathan Anand. He was born on October 27, 1966 in Calcutta, India. Barua holds the distinction of being the youngest participant of the Indian Chess Championship at the tender age of 12.


An outstanding player, Barua achieved several milestones throughout his career. In 1978, he secured a place at the National A tournament regardless of his young age. In 1982 he won the Indian Championship. He clinched the topmost position in several prestigious tournaments held extensively across the world including New Delhi, Calcutta, and Manila.


Barua earned his International Master title in 1983 and later in 1991, became an International Grandmaster. His consistent performances in various tournaments have significantly contributed to popularising the sport in India.


Over the years, Barua has extensively worked towards developing and fostering chess in India. Post his active playing career, he established the 'Dibyendu Barua Chess Academy' to further his goal of promoting chess in India and nurturing young talents from around the country. He has received the Arjuna Award, a prestigious sports award in India, in recognition of his significant contributions to the game of chess.


In personal life, Barua is married to Saheli Dhar Barua, who is a former national women's chess champion.
