Alexander Gennadyevich Beliavsky is a Soviet, Yugoslav, and Slovenian chess grandmaster. He was born on December 17, 1953 in Lviv, Ukraine. A four-time USSR Chess Champion, he has a strong reputation as a chess writer and trainer. He attended Lviv University and became a World Junior Chess Champion in 1973 and achieved the rank of International Master.


Beliavsky became a grandmaster two years later in 1975. He won the USSR Chess Championship four times and played in numerous team events representing the Soviet Union, including the Chess Olympiad and the European Team Championship. Beliavsky later moved to Slovenia and competed in team events on behalf of his new country.


Some notable games of Beliavsky include victories over world champions Anatoly Karpov, Garry Kasparov and Viswanathan Anand. He's also one of few players with a positive record against Bobby Fischer. He's renowned for his aggressive playing style and a mastery of tactics.


Besides professional chess career, Beliavsky is also an accomplished chess trainer and an author of several influential chess books. He works as a trainer in the Slovenian Chess Federation.
