Belov has had numerous notable accomplishments in chess. He shared first at the European Individual Chess Championship in 2004 and won a gold medal at the 2004 Chess Olympiad as a member of the Russian team. Belov finished as runner-up in the Young Stars of the World tournament in 2000 and the Under 20 section of the World Youth Chess Championship in 2004. He also won the North Sea Cup in 2007 and the Rilton Cup in 2009.

Apart from his playing career, Belov has also worked as a chess trainer. His notable trainees include Kateryna Lagno, Olga Girya, and Valentina Gunina.

Most of his current chess activity revolves around coaching other players. Belov holds a degree in sports management from Russian State University of Physical Education, Sport, Youth and Tourism.
