Rainer Buhmann is a German Chess Grandmaster who was born on March 24, 1981. He is a prominent figure in the world of professional chess and has achieved several victories throughout his career.


Buhmann played for the Chess Bundesliga, the premier team chess league in Germany, for the team SC Kreuzberg from 1997 to 2000 until he moved to Schweinfurt SC 2000. He then moved to the Godesberg SK where he played from 2001 to 2013 and in 2013, he returned to Hockenheim where he has played ever since.


In individual play, Buhmann achieved his first international success in 1999 when he won the U18 European Junior Championship in Patras. In 2000, Buhmann shared first place at the Seefelder Open and became the European U20 Team Champion with the German team. He became an International Master in 2000 and a Grandmaster in 2004.


He had a significant victory in June 2016 at the Hasselbacken Open tournament in Stockholm, where he scored 7½ out of 9 points. This was followed by a distinctive success in an Elite tournament in Dortmund where he clinched the second place, behind the winner Maxime Vachier-Lagrave.


Buhmann has taken part in four Chess Olympiads. In 2016, he was able to make an unbeaten run up to the finish line. Buhmann also competed in the 2017 Chess World Cup held in Tbilisi, representing Germany.
