Algimantas Butnorius is a Lithuanian chess Grandmaster (GM), born on 5 September 1946. He earned the International Master (IM) title in 1978 and the GM title in 1983. He has won the Lithuanian Chess Championship four times - first in 1982 and then consecutively in 1984, 1985 and 1986.
Butnorius represented his country internationally many times. He played for USSR in World Student Team Chess Championships - winning team gold in 1970 and individual gold in 1972. After Lithuania achieved independence, he represented the new country in several Olympiads. He won individual silver in Moscow 1994 and team bronze in Elista 1998 Chess Olympiads.
He also demonstrated strong performances in Senior competitions. He won the 65+ section of the World Senior Chess Championship in 2011. He also won two European Senior Chess Championships, in 2008 and 2012, for the 60+ category.
On top of his chess career, Butnorius worked as a university professor, and he has a Ph.D. in humanities.
