Valery Alexandrovich Chekhov is a Russian chess Grandmaster and was born on 27 May, 1955 in Yakutsk, Russian SFSR, Soviet Union.


He first became known in the chess world in 1972 when he became Soviet junior champion. In 1975, he won the European Junior Championship in Groningen, and then he was awarded the title of International Master. He earned the title of Grandmaster in 1982. He participated in many classical tournaments and has registered victories over prominent players including Boris Gulko, Lev Psakhis, Alexander Beliavsky, and Jaan Ehlvest.


Apart from competing, Chekhov is also a coach and has trained various players. Currently, he lives in Germany and has worked as a coach in the German Chess Federation from 1995.
