Bobby Cheng is an Australian Chess International Master and grandmaster. He was born on 14th March 1997 in Melbourne, Australia. Cheng became an International Master in 2013 at the age of just 16. The following year, he was the Australian Open Champion. Cheng earned the Grandmaster title in 2016.
His initial training was at the Tao Nan School, where he finished in the top 10 in the National Primary Schools Chess Championship in 2006. The next year, he moved to Australia and continued to hone his skills at Box Hill Chess Club.
In 2009, Cheng became Australian Junior Champion (under 12). Two years later, he notched a milestone by becoming the Victorian Junior Chess Champion. Cheng represented Australia at the World Youth Chess Championships in 2011 and finished 10th in the under 14-year category.
Cheng's rapid rise continued as he won the Victorian Chess Championship in 2012 and again in 2013. He was awarded the International Master title in 2013. The following year, Cheng bagged the top position in the Australian Open Chess Championship.
In 2015, Bobby won the Oceania Zonal Chess Championships which secured him a spot at the World Cup the same year. He notably achieved his third Grandmaster norm after a draw against Grandmaster Loek Van Wely at the 41st Chess Olympiad.
