Ivan Cheparinov is a Bulgarian chess player who was awarded the title of 'International Grandmaster' by FIDE in 2004. His coach was Silvio Danailov and his highest ranking was 30 in the 26 Jan 2008 World Rankings.
Cheparinov was born on November 26, 1986, in Asenovgrad, Bulgaria. Making multiple appearances in the European Youth Chess Championships, he won gold in his age category twice. In 2004, during the 36th Chess Olympiad, his performance earned him the silver medal. The same year, he also won the Essent Open in Hoogeveen.
Apart from team events, Cheparinov's impressive performances continued in individual tournaments as well. In 2005, he won the Young Masters tournament in Lausanne where he beat stars like Magnus Carlsen. He defeated Alexey Shirov in the Magistral Ciutat de Barcelona tournament in 2006.
In 2008, Cheparinov made it to the finals of the World Cup after beating Sergey Karjakin and Gata Kamsky, among others. However, he lost to Gata Kamsky in the final.
Cheparinov's performance in the 2015/2016 edition of the Tata Steel Chess Tournament was quite noteworthy. In 2018, he won the Charlotte Chess Center's Winter 2018 GM Norm Invitational. The same year, he switched federations from Bulgaria to Georgia.
He came first in the 2019 European Individual Chess Championship, held in Skopje, North Macedonia. Cheparinov has been one of the seconds for former World Champion Veselin Topalov, and has also represented Bulgaria and Georgia at various Chess Olympiads.
