He started learning chess at a young age of 7 and took part in various district, state, and national level competitions before stepping into international chess tournaments. He achieved significant milestones in his early career, such as becoming National Under-11 Champion in 2006 and winning bronze in the Asian Under-12 Championship. He transitioned into a professional chess player in August 2010 after achieving his International Master title.


Throughout his career, Sayantan Das has competed in many other major chess competitions and has won several notable matches. His performance in the World Junior Chess Championship in 2014 is one of his notable career highlights. In 2016, he got his first Grandmaster Norm, becoming one of the youngest chess players in India to achieve this. He achieved his second and third norms in the latter part of 2016, confirming his Grandmaster title.


He has played a major role in driving the popularity of chess in India. He has mentored budding chess players and has been active in conducting chess workshops and coaching seminars across the nation.
