Dlugy's impressive career in the sport includes a multitude of achievements. He was the winner of the World Junior Chess Championship in 1985 and a gold medalist representing the United States in the World Team Chess Championship in 1986. He served as the president of the United States Chess Federation from 1990 to 1993. As a player, Dlugy was ranked as a top-10 player in the United States. Despite his long break from competitive chess from 1993 to 2006, Dlugy made a successful comeback, notably winning the 2016 World Open in Philadelphia.

Not only having a successful career in chess, but Dlugy also made a name for himself in the world of finance. He attended Yale University and Columbia Business School, leading him to found Grandmaster Capital Management, a hedge fund, in 2007.

However, in 2015, he faced legal troubles when he was arrested at the John F. Kennedy airport on charges involving insider trading. In the following years, the hedge fund he founded was liquidated, and Dlugy pled guilty to the charges, receiving a sentence of five years of probation.

His notable students include grandmaster Fabiano Caruana.

He is also a published author, having written a book titled "Grandmaster Insiders".
