Lutz Espig is a retired East German chess Grandmaster (GM). Born on February 19, 1949 in Leisnig, Germany, he was ranked the world’s fourth-best U18 player in 1967. Espig earned the International Master title in 1968 and became a GM in 1975. He won shared first in 1970 and won in 1976 at the East German Chess Championship. He played for East Germany in six Chess Olympiads from 1968 to 1978. Espig also played for East Germany in the European Team Chess Championship in 1977. He won individual silver and team bronze at the European Team Chess Championship in 1973. Currently, Espig works as a system analyst.
