Daniel Howard Fernandez is a British chess Grandmaster (GM) who was born on 9th March, 1995 in Stockport, UK. He is currently playing for the Wood Green chess club based in London, United Kingdom.
Fernandez received his International Master (IM) title in 2013 and his GM title in 2017. He is a prolific writer and has produced many theoretical novelties in various opening lines. Over the years, he has participated in numerous tournaments, notably the 17th Bangkok Chess Club Open in 2017 where he achieved the necessary score to attain his GM norm.
Not only a successful player, he is also a noted chess instructor and author. Fernandez co-authored the book "The Modernized Scotch Game" which was published by Thinkers Publishing in 2018. Further contributions to chess literature include multiple articles for chess periodicals and annotations of high-level games.
Fernandez is an alumnus of The Manchester Grammar School and the National University of Singapore, where he read Global Studies. Following his studies, he taught at Eden Prairie High School in Minnesota, United States of America during the school year 2018-2019. He also co-taught a course in Artificial Intelligence at East China Normal University in Shanghai, China.
While living in the United States, Fernandez played chess for the Saint Louis Arch Bishops in the United States Chess League (USCL). Earlier, he played for the Singaporean team in the Asian 4 Nations Chess League.
