Miroslav Filip was a Czech chess grandmaster born on October 27, 1928. He was awarded the title of International Master in 1953 and was made International Grandmaster in 1955. He featured in many World Chess Championships including those of 1955, 1958, and 1962. He also participated in more than twelve Czechoslovakian Chess Championships, winning two of them, in 1950 and 1952. Filip became an International Arbiter in 1973 and served as vice president of FIDE from 1975 to 1982. His greatest achievement was a first place shared with Smyslov at Mariánské LáznÄ› in 1960. Filip retired from competitive chess in 1973. He wrote a number of books about chess, primarily dealing with opening theory. He passed away on April 27, 2009.
