Valerij Filippov is a Russian chess Grandmaster and coach, known for his accomplishment in the Russian Chess Championship and handling a roster of talented chess players. Born on March 28, 1975, Filippov was taught to play the game by his father, rising to the title of Grandmaster in 1997.


He has achieved significant results in a number of chess tournaments and championships, beginning with the tender age of 10 when he won the Tomsk Junior Championship. Some of his major achievements include winning the Berliner Summer Tournament twice in 2002 and 2003, and triumphing in the 2005 Abu Dhabi Masters Tournament. In 2009, he took the first place in both the Russian Championship in Zheleznogorsk and the Vasylyshyn Memorial in Ukraine.


Filippov has competed and represented his country in team championships, including the 1998 Chess Olympiad. He was also part of the team that won gold at the European Team Chess Championships in 2003.


In addition to his playing career, Filippov has served as a coach for several renowned players. His most prominent student is three-time Women's World Chess Champion, Zhu Chen, whom he trained from 2001.


Currently, he resides in Qatar and continues to work as a chess coach, nurturing young and talented players.
