Joshua Friedel is an American chess Grandmaster. Born in 1986 in New Hampshire, he first started playing chess in middle school. He has twice won the Samford Chess Fellowship, in 2007 and 2010, helping him advance his chess studies. Additionally, Friedel achieved the distinction of International Master in 2005 and became a Grandmaster in 2008.
He has played in numerous individual tournaments and helped the U.S. win silver in the 2006 World Youth Team Championship held in Yerevan, Armenia. In 2013, he moved to the San Francisco Bay Area and has since won or co-won several chess tournaments.
Friedel is also known for his work as a writer and coach, having written numerous articles about chess and having coached at several Scholastic chess camps. He provides private lessons and even offers online coaching. His approach emphasizes patient, methodical thinking and understanding of the complex dynamics of chess.
