Shardul Gagare is an Indian chess grandmaster who obtained his title in 2016. Born on September 3, 1997, in Ahmednagar, Maharashtra, he began playing chess at a young age. Gagare achieved his first major success in 2004 when he won the Under-8 Maharashtra State Schools championship. He has since won numerous chess competitions including the World Youth Chess Championship (2014), KIIT International Chess Festival (2015), and the Mayor's Cup International Open Chess Tournament (2015). In March 2016, he received the grandmaster title after achieving his third and final grandmaster norm at the Cannes International Open. Considering four factors - Age, GM, World rating, and Current form - Shardul ranks 3rd in India. His younger sister, Shalmali Gagare, is also an accomplished chess player.
