Aryan Gholami is an Iranian chess player, who obtained the title of International Master (IM) in 2017, and Grandmaster (GM) in 2019. He was born on 1 April 2000. Gholami took part in several chess competitions from a young age, and became a national champion at under-12 level. He has represented Iran in various international tournaments including the World Junior Chess Championships and the Chess Olympiad. In 2018, he achieved his first Grandmaster norm at the Aeroflot Open.
Gholami also gained attention at the 2019 Rilton Cup when he decided not to play against an opponent from Israel due to his country's policy regarding Israel. He received a commendation from Iran's sports minister for his decision. He also faced controversy after an incident in the 2019 Chess World Cup where he was penalized for not shaking his opponent's hand before and after the game. Gholami cited cultural differences as the reason, as such physical contact is not allowed in his culture. He later apologized for the misunderstanding. Outside of chess, Gholami is studying to become a dentist.
